1 Cor. 2:9-10 “But as it is written: “EYE HAS NOT SEEN, NOR EAR HEARD, NOR HAVE ENTERED INTO THE HEART OF MAN THE THINGS WHICH GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.”
Paul quotes from Isa. 64:4 and applies it to the people of his day. He writes in verse 11, “For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.” Unless man communicates his thoughts, no one can be sure of what he is thinking. How can we ever know what God thinks unless He chooses to reveal His mind to us? He writes of the natural man who just cannot understand the things revealed by the Spirit. His mindset is on the physical, the here and now. Notice in our original text that God has prepared things for them that love Him that is unimaginable. Our thoughts do not run on the same track with God. He has revealed those things to us through His Spirit that we might understand even the deeper things of God
The natural man cannot know the things of God. The eternal truth is not determined by personal sensation. It is not founded on feelings or one’s personal perception. The word natural has to do with the sensual nature of man. It is often used in contrast to the spiritual. To him the spiritual things of God are foolish. His thoughts are based solely on his animal instincts. Rom. 8:5-6 “For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.” The carnal mind directs his own steps, Jer. 10:23, “O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself; It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.” The spiritually minded set their minds on the Spiritual matters revealed by God. These revelations are what he bases his thoughts and life around.
Truth is determined by the revelation of the Spirit. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,” 2 Tim. 3:16. In 2 Pet. 1:19-21, Peter wrote, “And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” Truth was not revealed through confusion but organization. God organized His revealing. As a result we have access to the complete unadulterated truth from God through the Holy Spirit. Where does this spiritual understand originate? “For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;” Col. 1:9.
