TAKING AIM

The batter stands at the plate with his bat poised and ready for the swing. He hears the coach behind him yells, ”Keep your eye on the ball”! One cannot hit what he does not see. How many times have we seen a professional athlete miss an easy pass simply because he took his eye of the football? Attaining our goals in life requires a concentrated focus. What about our spiritual goals? In Philippians 3:13-14, Paul discusses that purposed attitude, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Notice the apostle defines his pursuit to “This one thing I do”. The one thing that Paul does is in verse 14, “I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” In verse 12 Paul wrote, “Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.” He word “press” is defined as “speeding on earnestly” as in a foot race.  VINES Paul’s pursuit is reaching the prize set before him, the upward call of God. In his commentary, Barnes describes this upward call as “from heaven and to heaven”. It is his goal not yet attained, but for which he reaches. In order to focus on the high calling one must forget the past. All of his successes, failures, accolades and attainments became as garbage. (See v. 8). Our minds must be clear of all the pressures of this world The apostle John encouraged the Christian to “not love the world nor the things in this world. (1 John 2:15) Notice that this one thing is something to be done. We cannot just wish it to be done, nor can we expect it to be done outside of personal effort. Going to heaven requires a “DOING”. Notice the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, Mat 7:24-25  “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. ” Hearing is not enough. We must do His will. Read Heb. 13:20-21, “Now may the God of peace who brought up our Lord Jesus from the dead, that great Shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make you complete in every good work to do His will, working in you what is well pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.” In 3: 10-12; Paul states, “that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.” This passage clearly defined the aim of Paul, that by the fellowship with the sufferings of Christ he might attain the resurrection of the dead.
