A friend once said, “Never do today what can be put off until tomorrow.” There might be some mundane, menial task that can be postponed without difficulty, but there are some things that are too important to put off. If an individual is having severe chest pains he needs to seek immediate medical attention and not wait for a convenient time. The same is true about our spiritual condition. Many folks understand that there are important spiritual matters that need to be addressed but rationalize reasons not to do them thinking that these issues will be addressed later. Such was the man Felix. He, like others, was curious about this man Paul so he visited him. Notice the inspired account in Acts 24:24-26; “And after some days, when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was Jewish, he sent for Paul and heard him concerning the faith in Christ. Now as he reasoned about righteousness, self-control, and the judgment to come, Felix was afraid and answered, ‘Go away for now; when I have a convenient time I will call for you.’ Meanwhile he also hoped that money would be given him by Paul, that he might release him. Therefore he sent for him more often and conversed with him.” The Bible tells us in verse 22 that Felix had a more accurate knowledge of the Way. “When Felix made his way to see Paul, the preacher reasoned with him about righteousness, self- control and judgment. Upon hearing these things Felix became afraid and replied, ‘When it is convenient, I will call you.’” Afterwards, Felix would frequently summon Paul to talk with him, yet he never responded to the truth Paul preached. In fact, his motives are that Paul would pay him to be released. Integrity was not a strong suit in him.
Consider what the Bible teaches about an immediate response. “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does” James 1:23-25. The mirror is described as the perfect law of liberty, which is the Bible. He reads and learns that things are amiss in his life, but the minute he closes the Bible he forgets what he read. Most people are not committed to do His will. Or like Felix we put it off waiting for a more convenient time. It is easier to make excuses rather than commitments. Because of the uncertainty of life, (James 4:13-14) one must not put off taking care of his spiritual needs.
2 Cor 6:2, “ For He says: ‘In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you.’ Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”
