It is a fact that life has many ups and downs. Circumstances come that we have no control over and tries to cheat us out of our joy and peace. Illnesses, death of loved ones, job related incidents can all invade our lives leaving us feeling depressed. The Bible acknowledges those times. We find in Rom. 12:15, the apostle Paul encourages us to “weep with those who weep.” And in Gal. 6:2 Paul commanded, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” The inspired word recognizes that we will have those low times and the care and concern of our brothers and sisters will lift us up.
It is a sin when our depression becomes greater than our faith. Listen to the Master in Luke 12:22, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on.” We tend to worry much over the mundane things of this life. These passages inform of us of the PROHIBITION of needless worry. Does worry solve the problem?
Jesus gave the PREVENTION of worry in Luke 12:23, “Life is more than food, and the body is more than clothing.” In other words, do not become so entwined in this world that we lose sight of the next one. We need to take a lesson from nature. Who cares for the birds and clothes the flowers? (See vs. 24 and 27). Paul continues in Phil. 4:6, “In everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” To PREVENT anxiety our faith must be larger than our concerns and problems.
We have the PROMISE, “and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” Phil. 4:7. In Luke 12:30-32 Jesus said, “For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you. Do not fear, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” Do not worry about the physical things because God already knows our needs, but rather first seek the kingdom. Why strive and worry about the things which have very little profit. Jesus once asked, “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?” Mat. 16:26.
So, don’t worry trust in God!
